Welcome to the Waldhof*
*(German for Forest Farm)
Pardon us as this website is under construction.
Waldhof is a working environmentally, organic farm where we hope that this will be your first step to new opportunities for creative growth.
Every practicing human being should have the chance to concentrate on his or her work for a period of time without the multitude of daily distractions that hamper our lives.
Time is set aside for revitalizing the creative spirit, pursuing new trains of thought, or concentrating on an idea already in the works are essential parts of being a productive artist.
Waldhof’s “mother earth” setting offers the tourist, visitor or artist a tranquil, natural environment in which to think, plan and work. Set on 37 acres of rolling Kentucky hills, Waldoris a small working farm replete with wildlife, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, miniature cows, walking trails, wildflower festooned woods, organic gardens, and spectacular nightscapes. Experience the restorative power and sense of professional accomplishment that a stay at Waldhof can bring. Inspiration and discovery are built in.
Here at Waldhof you can stay at our hostel or rent a cabin and do absolutely nothing, use it as a base to go sightseeing or you can have an experience of a lifetime by becoming a farmer for a day or a week.
Owned and operated by Rosie and Sam Hays who have created this delightful old world habitat and actually live in a straw built home where multi-languages are spoken here, German, English, Czech and Russian. Together they have built every inch of this wonderful retreat with their own hands.
Creativity demands that human beings be allowed to retreat, at times, from their world and their obligations and with that in mind Rosie will offer workshops in Pottery, Old World Bread Making, Goat milking, Cheese making, wild flowers, Medicinal Herbs and many other things.
Waldhof also offers day retreats where one can come to work away from the daily distractions of ones home whether you want to work on something you are writing or painting or creating.
Examples of Day Retreats/Artist Groups:
A professor of art from a local university could bring his or her art students out to study and experience the Waldhof’s ambiance to prepare for a community art project they are working on or a group of plein air painters might want to spend the day at Waldhof creating the natural environment and connecting with nature while capturing on paper or canvas.
Women’s retreats
Waldhof retreats and residencies provide time and space for women artists to create in an environment that inspires, nurtures, and rejuvenates. Stays there encourage self-exploration and personal growth through the land and house resources and the company of other women. It allows women to be artists and possibly activists first, in a world where they juggle so many other roles and responsibilities.
While staying at Waldhof you may take advantage of stained glass, jewelry making and art classes at Avalon Stained Glass School & Creativity Center and get a special discount just by booking your stay at Waldhof and clicking here.
Sam Hays turned 70 on August 25, 2011 and on August 26 many of his friends joined him and his family to celebrate this mile stone in his life at Waldhof.
