This weekís Kentucky artist is Steve Hovious Scroll saw art is a delicate art that takes lots of patience and there is a fine line between scroll saw fine art and firewood art. Steve R Hovious is a self taught scroll saw fine arts artist who took up the art as a hobby after he became ill in 2002. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, he grew up in Paragon Indiana. After graduating high school in 1982 Steve enlisted into the National Guards and had a 20 year career as a pump Master until his illness. After becoming ill Steve and his wife moved to Columbia Kentucky in December 2006. Over that winter he started researching the arts and crafts area on the internet to see if there was something he was capable of doing with his medical problems. Steve discovered the scroll saw and a couple easy projects. He started doing more research on the scroll saw and its capabilities and signed up with several Scroll Saw Forums. By February 2007 Steve had totally convinced himself he wanted to do this and he purchased his first scroll saw, materials, and supplies for under $200 and gave it a try. In no time Steve found it very addictive and lots of fun. He says, “Each and every piece that gets finished just adds fuel to the addiction of wanting to do more. I have posted my work on the forums I belong to and receive several great compliments on them. I am also learning to make patterns for these cutting as well.” The picture with god bless our troops was from one of Steveís patterns he designed. Of the other pictures of his cuttings Steve says, “I need to give RC Mitchell, Honey, ARPOP, makinsawdust925, Revscott, and NCscrollsawer the credit for their contribution of the patterns and many thanks as well.” Finally Steve felt ready to take the plunge in the fine arts world and in June of 2007 he entered a piece in the Open arts category called Mule Deer in the Adair county Fair. It received a first place ribbon. Steve has been using ª” Birch or Oak Plywood for his cuttings. He makes the majority of them as an 8″ x 10″ portrait and he lines the back with felt, finally putting them in a picture frame. Steve has created a site where everyone can view his work along with the materials and credit to the pattern maker: http://hovious.blogspot.com/. Steveís E-mail address is shovious@windstream.net if you would like to contact him about purchasing his work or having him make something special for you.
