About Shan-Merry (1938-____)

Shan was born in Paris in 1938. In 1957, she was a student at the School of Fine Arts in Angers. Ms. Merry is a model-maker and designer of scarves for HERMES, with a special, “Profile” presented at the Museum of Horses in Chantilly. She began her painting career in 1972 with her first Parisian shows. She has participated in numberous international exhibitions including New York, Chicago and Osaka. Awards received for her paintings include the New York watercolor prize in 1974, Chevalier of Arts-Sciences-Letter, Chevalier of Cultural and Artistic Merit, Member of Italian Academy with gold medal, and “Signature” prize in 1979.

Shan-Merry’s signature medium is watercolor, primarily depicting images of young, alluring women. Her use of heavy, darkened eyes and lashes are contrasted by swirling hair and pastel, understated facial features, creating a highly sensuous image. As she places these figures on light colored and often totally white backgrounds, this sensuality is intertwined with an air of purity.
