I sometimes listen

more closely than usual

to the words I speak

and the works they do.

Who thought to put such letters together?

Overuse makes them strange in my mind.

a syllable here, a paraphrase there

and some favourites roll off the tongue

into my imagination

susurrus

murmur

puddle

and they roll further like pebbles
