National Gardening Association

The National Gardening Association is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1973 and since then has become this nation’s leader in plant based information. They are headquartered in South Burlington, Vermont.

Their biggest contribution to gardening, as far as I am concerned, is their flagship adoption program called the Adopt a School Garden Program which bridges the gap between classes K-12 in schools that lack resources and people who have the talent, time and ability to help.

The National Gardening Association established early on that school programs give children a tremendous boost in achievement, help to cultivate skills they can use later on in life, add greatly to the child’s healthy lifestyles and helps to connect the school child with nature through hands on gardening learning.

They helped to establish April as National Gardening Month and they have a website where you can sign up for their free monthly newsletters on gardening.

They have a monthly project, great newsletters, and two other websites which include one for gardening and one for kids gardening which is an award winning website. This site features thousands of free articles, has activities and projects which includes advice on everything from planning a school garden to raising funds to support it. They offer online courses and a great monthly Kids Garden Newsletter delivered via email, plus they print a quarterly newsletter called Growing Ideas.

They are in their 24th year of offering grants and awards to schools to start, create or maintain school gardening projects and which helps educators expand their knowledge in plant based education.

The National Gardening Association will put on the NYC GROWS Garden Festival hosted by Target and it will take place in NYC’s Union Square Park on Sunday, April 27, 2008. This 3rd annual garden festival is co-hosted by the National Gardening Association and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. This show will provide opportunities for businesses nationwide, regional and local to demonstrate their social responsibility and to make the consumer more aware of brands of gardening products and techniques that will help to make their lives more "green".
