Who's Who in KY Arts and Crafts©
by Arlene Wright-Correll
This week’s Kentucky artist is Steve Clay
When does a drawing look almost like a photograph? When it is done by Summer Shade, KY artist Steve Clay!
Shy and retiring, Steve Clay has been drawing since high school. He is so good at it that he won scholarships to several colleges and turned them down simply because he is shy.
Steve started drawing fences, landscapes, posts, barns, cars, license plates; you name it when it dawned on him that instead of drawing the whole subject he might just zero in on a part of it that interested him. Thus he started to develop an incredible style that has brought him to the attention of many people. He won 1st place in the 2005 KY State Fair Purchase award with his tree stump and wire drawing. Another one of his drawings took 2nd place at the KY state fair.
His drawing titled "51 on 31" will be high lighted in North Light’s new drawing book titled "Stokes of Genius’ Best Drawings"
There is a lot of interesting lines in a drawing that shows just the undercarriage of a train he saw at the L &M depot in Bowling Green. Steve says most of his drawings have 100 to 150 hours of work in them and that he uses the finest graphic and colored pencils he can buy.
He says he gets lost in his drawings and sketches and when he looks up thinking he has worked about 15 minutes he will discover he has been at it for 2 or 3 hours.
This writer believes that Steve Clay is just starting to come into his own as an artist and predicts his work will soon become really best sellers in the art world. His work starts at $500.00 and I personally feel that is dirt cheap! He can be reached at 670 6169 when he is not working as a machine operator at Dana Corporation.
His dream is to be able to work at just drawing some day and be able to live on the signed limited edition prints from 4 or 5 works a year. This writer believes that with the right moves and help that could soon become a reality for Steve Clay. You can see some of his work at the Cultural Center in Glasgow, KY.
