Who's Who in KY Arts and Crafts©

arlene 2005:

This week's Kentucky artist is Mary Sego

by Arlene Wright-Correll

segomerge:

Each week I am constantly amazed by the amount of artistic talent that I come across and this week I had the delightful pleasure to meet Mary Sego of 510 Elk St. in Munfordville, KY.

It seems that Hart County is full of talented people! As far as I am concerned Mary Sego should be called one of Hart County’s National Treasures!

Mary is in her 80’s, has just recovered fully from a heart attack, is still an active school bus monitor who is looking forward to retiring at the end of this school year so she can devote more time to painting and all the other things she feels she wants to do.

A native of Munfordville, she married when she was 16, raised her family and didn’t start painting until 1976 when she was into her second marriage. Her husband wanted to give Mary something special for that Christmas and since she had been drawing since she could hold a crayon as a young child, she told him she wanted art supplies. He told her to buy what she wanted and he would pay for it.

She went into Glasgow to a store and bought a "How to Paint with Acrylics" by Walter Foster. She read it from cover to cover and started working in acrylics with her new paints, brushes, canvases and easel.

Mary has since gone on to further educate herself as a "self taught" artist and graduated from acrylics to watercolors to pastels.

Many of her paintings sell quickly and she has won many awards over the years.

I asked Mary what her favorite medium was and she said, "Acrylics as they get less "muddy" than oils. I like water colors also, but they are not as "forgiving" as the other mediums. Once I make a mistake in water colors, I usually have to discard the painting as most times it can not be repaired as I can in the other mediums. I do mostly landscapes and still lives"

Mary went on to say, "I paint on anything, shovels, mailboxes, saw blades, glass, trinket boxes, you name it. Years ago I used to be a weaver."

She paints many of her wonderful paintings from memories of her life on a KY farm. She sometimes works with a digital camera when she has it with her.

She uses her utility room as a studio which she laughingly says she shares with her washer and dryer.

Mary says, "Riding on the school bus as a monitor for 2.5 hours twice a day, I get to see a lot of local landscape in all four seasons. My memory is still good and I sketch it when I get home in the afternoon. I love those lovely old fences and gates, the old bumpy country roads. I guess it is in my blood to paint and I have many things I still want to do."

Well, I guess Mary has been doing it and hopefully will continue to do it. Her paintings are historical records of Hart County and their timeless beauty will give pleasure to those who have the opportunity to see them.

Mary’s paintings can be seen by appointment only. Just give her a call at 270 524 4411. Her smaller paintings start at $150.00. Her email is msego@scrtc.com
