About Francois (Fanch) Ledan

Francois (Fanch) Ledan (b. 1949) is noted for delightful scenes of his native Brittany in a colorful "primitive" style. In 1968 he abandoned his studies in commercial design for full-time studies in painting and fine art. His talent was quickly recognized and soon he was involved in major European shows.

He became involved in printmaking in 1973 when he learned lithography in Paris. Since then he has had more than 25 one-person shows in Europe, North America and South America.

The art crafted by Fanch Ledan, known today primarily by his Breton nickname (Fanch) is inextricably tied to the events of his life. While a student in Paris in 1968 Fanch began to paint and his artwork was accepted in several galleries and major European exhibitions.

In 1972 he entered the MBA program in Sacramento State University and started to display his original acrylic paintings in galleries in California and New York.

In 1975 after he learned the difficult technique of lithography in Parish his first edition of lithography was published in Tallandier in Paris.

Over the next few years he would work in a number of highly esteemed printing studios in San Francisco, Long, New York, Melbourned, Los Angeles, Paris, and Tel-Aviv. His prints have been distributed by major publishers around the world; Original Print Collectors Group, Circle Gallery, Brentano's, Hammer Publishing, Christies Contemporary Art, De Francony, Okuda Art, Blinder Fine Art Collectors and Part West Gallery.

In 1980 he met Armand Hammer in New York who started collecting his paintings. His artworks are also in the collections of Jacques Costeau, Baron Bich, Jack Nicholson, John Williams, and Prince Albert.

Fanch has done paintings and projects for major corporations in Japan, U.S.A. & France such as U.S. Air, Air France, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Tokyo Dome, HAVAS, Esso Exxon, and Yokohama.

In the early 1980's Fanch began to work on paintings that he refers to as "interiorscapes" and to include paintings by modern masters in his "interior visions".

Following the publication of the book "The Collected Works of Fanch Ledan" a major catalogue raisonne of 235 color pages reproducing 258 different graphics published since 1975 was released by Park West Edition in 2003.
