The Magic and Tragic Case of the Oriental Lilies©

Oriental lilies are the most magical and beautiful plants I know. I spend every spare dime I can lay my hands on to buy some each year and over the past nine years of building my gardens, changing my gardens; Oriental lilies have played a large hand in them.

I was able to have all kinds and when they are left alone after they blossom they will feed down through the stalks to the root bulb and give you great pleasure the following year. That is as long as you watch the hired help. I hire weed pickers and about the seventh year my Oriental lily garden was a thing to behold and I had 7 weed pickers out there the beginning of the third week of July because I wanted this one particular part of the gardens to be grand for Carl’s birthday party.

Keeping your eye on 7 weed pickers is quite a job and I was out in one of the big rose beds showing a 7 foot 2 inch weed picker that he did not need to pick one weed, walk 10 feet across to the weed pile and walk ten feet back that he could easily bring a bucket to collect the weeds, fill it up and then empty it when I heard the deadly sound of a gasoline powered weed whacker.

Before I could make it over to the other side of the house the weed whacker user had managed to weed whack down about $800.00 of rare and beautiful Oriental Lilies that were going to be in full bloom just in time for Carl’s birthday party. Why in the world he had this in his van is beyond me because weed whacking was not on the agenda at all that day. I was emphatic about hand pulling weeds! Plus this guy was the driver, he was not hired to do anything, but I guess he wanted to speed things up. Needless to say this whole area of Oriental Lilies never, ever bloomed again.

I had Crystal Star Lily, Black Beauty Lily, my beloved Casa Blanca Lily, the all time flasher Star Fighter Lily and the Star Gazer Lily, just to mention a few.

This was the second time I really had murder in my heart. Once was the summer before when the strawberry patch was destroyed and now this. I paid them off and never hired that bunch again!
